BMW X5 hydrogen fuel cell details revealed

  • BMW is co-developing the hydrogen fuel cell technology with Toyota
  • Will be sold under ‘i Hydrogen Next’ sub-brand

BMW has revealed the first official details about its new hydrogen fuel cell powertrain. Developed in co-operation with Toyota, the fuel cell technology will form a new sub-brand called the ‘i Hydrogen Next’. The first car under this new sub-brand will be the X5 and is slated to roll out in 2022.

The fuel cell powertrain in question is claimed to have a total system output of around 369bhp. The fuel cell system alone will generate 125kW of electricity to power the motor by the chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in ambient air. The only byproduct of this reaction would be water vapour. An electric converter located underneath the fuel cell will adapt the voltage of both the electric powertrain and the peak power battery. And the vehicle will accommodate two 700 bar tanks containing six kilograms of hydrogen which will be capable of refuelling in just three to four minutes. The fifth-generation eDrive unit slated to debut in the iX3 soon will be integrated into the i Hydrogen Next vehicles as well. This system will also have a peak power battery positioned above the electric motor to inject an extra dose of power when overtaking or accelerating.

The BMW Group has been working with the Toyota Motor Corporation on fuel cell technology since 2013. Both the carmakers are also founding members of the Hydrogen Council which has seen the number of companies increased to 80 since 2017.

Apart from Toyota, the Bavarian carmaker is also participating in the research project BRYSON (a German acronym for ‘space-efficient hydrogen storage tanks with optimised usability’). This alliance between BMW AG and various technical universities in Germany seeks to develop high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks with flat design for fuel cell vehicles. The success of this project will also help to lower the cost of manufacturing hydrogen tanks for fuel cell vehicles, enabling the fuel cell vehicles to compete with pure electric vehicles.

After the pilot program with the X5 fuel cell in 2022, the carmaker plans to bring this technology to large scale production by the second half of this decade.

BMW India sold 9,641 cars in 2019

  • BMW sold 9000 cars last year, while Mini managed to find 641 sellers
  • Locally manufactured SUVs comprised up to 50 per cent of the sales

After a tough year, BMW Group India ended 2019 with a drop of 13 per cent in domestic sales. The Bavarian carmaker sold 9641 cars last year, including 641 dispatched by Mini India, as compared to 11,105 units sold in 2018. Over 50 per cent of the sales last year came from locally manufactured SUVs namely X5, X3 and X1. Locally produced 3 Series and 5 Series also provided a strong boost in sales apart from locally manufactured Mini Countryman.

Rudratej Singh, President and Chief Executive Officer, BMW Group India, commenting on the sales performance, said, “2019 was not an easy year for the Indian automotive industry as various macroeconomic and structural conditions shook its foundations. We successfully initiated new consumers to come into the segment with the BMW 3 Series and the BMW X1. At the same time, we created a clear path for upgrade for segment users with the BMW X5, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW 7 Series. We have a healthy order book for the BMW X7 which is sold out for months. Though the industry is still facing difficult times, we are well prepared for 2020. We will always be competitive by remaining focused on our customers.”

As mentioned, the recently launched X7 full-size SUV is in huge demand and is already sold out. Meanwhile, the German carmaker had a long list of launches last year including M2 CS, M5 Competition, new-gen 3 Series, 7 Series and X7, X5, X4 and lastly the Z4.

Top SUV Reviews of 2019
SUVs are all the rage lately. Every manufacturer is scurrying around to offer the best of SUVs they could come up with to the customers who want nothing else than a high riding vehicle these days. So as the year 2019 comes to an end, we take a look back at all the SUV reviews we did in the last calendar year.

MG Hector Exterior
MG Hector

One of the newest entrants in the highly competitive SUV segment, the MG Hector came in with few aces up its sleeves. We think that the Hector is large while being feature-packed, looks rich, has set a higher standard for in-car technology, rides well and is a comfortable five-seater for its price.

MG Hector Exterior
Kia Seltos

Kia took the Indian market by a storm with their all-new Seltos. One of the most handsome looking SUV we have come across, the Seltos has a lot going for it. Apart from the striking design, it is loaded with features to the brim and offers top-notch interior quality. Also, you are spoilt for choice with the many variants on offer and the engine/transmission combinations. And it also drives well.

MG Hector Exterior
Mahindra XUV300

Mahindra marked their entry in the sub-four metre segment with the XUV300. Based on the international-spec Tivoli, the XUV300 ticks all the right boxes. So it looks great, has plenty of features and a strong diesel engine. It may not have the best interior fit and finish and the top-end variants may be pricey, but the XUV300 is an impressive product nonetheless.

MG Hector Exterior
Hyundai Venue

Another newcomer in the sub-four metre segment category, the Venue went on to win the prestigious Indian Car of the Year Award. The Venue nails the brief about being a compact family SUV. It is powered by refined engine options and has a comfortable cabin that’s well stocked with features. And with its well-sorted dynamics, the Venue has become our new favourite in the crossover segment.

MG Hector Exterior
Ford Endeavour

With a mild facelift, the Endeavour got an updated cabin this year but it still continues to be a humongous and imposing SUV. It is well-specced, safe and can take you to the office, your extended family away for a weekend getaway and you can even engage in some serious off-roading fun along with your friends. The Endeavour simply fits the bill.

MG Hector Exterior
Skoda Kodiaq Scout

Skoda’s Kodiaq is a well-rounded SUV which offers everything one can ask for in an urban premium seven-seater SUV. With the Scout badging, Skoda has added a rugged appeal to the otherwise stately looking Kodiaq and we love it furthermore.

MG Hector Exterior
BMW X5

Even though the X5 is a massive looking car, it has all the trappings of a sports car. Offered in the explosive 30d guise, the X5 managed to perform everything a premium SUV is expected to do while also managing to impress us with its athletic driving dynamics.

MG Hector Exterior
Mercedes-Benz GLC

The GLC is already one of the highest selling models produced by Mercedes Benz in India and this update which includes the introduction of the MBUX system and the connected car tech only add to its appeal. With fresher looks, top notch interiors and an amazing ride quality, one really can’t go wrong with the new GLC. We would have appreciated if it came with slightly more driving enjoyment though.

MG Hector Exterior
Hyundai Kona EV

Who could have imagined that Hyundai would be offering us a long range electric SUV so soon. The Kona Electric is a global product and it is unique, be it in the terms of looks or stance while being an absolute tech-fest. We bet, the Kona Electric will keep you interested for a long time.

MG Hector Exterior
MG ZS EV

Wrapping up the year, we also sampled another electric SUV, this time from MG. The ZS EV looks conventional, but drives phenomenally. Sure it could do with little more features, but as an overall product, the ZS EV suits the requirement of a modern-day urban car buyer.
