The Coronavirus pandemic has grappled the entire nation, and routine life and normalcy have come to a near standstill. But before the COVID-19 outbreak could even reach India, we at CarWale were able to review quite a few cars in January. So, here’s a quick recap of all the cars we reviewed at the start of this year.

Top Car Reviews

Renault Kwid Review

BMW Z4 Exterior

The Renault Kiwd got a facelift in October 2019, and with it, it received a completely new fascia. The SUV-inspired design updates have made the Kwid the best-looking entry hatchback in its class, and by a fair margin at that. Besides, the Kwid comes packed with a touchscreen infotainment system, offers a cushy slow-speed ride and is easy to manoeuvre in city. To know more about it, read our review of this top-spec Kwid 1.0 AMT.

Volvo XC40 T4 R-Design Petrol Review

BMW Z4 Action

Volvo India recently introduced a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre petrol engine in the XC40 range, which is available in a single T4 R-Design trim. This entry-level Volvo competes against the BMW X1Mercedes-Benz GLA, and the Audi Q3. The XC40 is the best-looking SUV in its segment, having won the European Car of the Year (2018) and Women’s Car of the Year (2018) awards. What’s more, it is feature-packed and comes equipped with a responsive engine and sorted dynamics. To learn more about the Volvo XC40 T4 R-Design Petrol, here’s CarWale’s take on entry-level luxury SUV.

Kia Carnival Review

BMW Z4 Exterior

The Carnival is Kia‘s second product for India, priced from Rs 24.95 lakh (ex-showroom India). The MPV is aimed as a premium alternative to the reigning segment leader, the Toyota Innova Crysta. It comes with acres of space for all its occupants and is available in multiple seating combinations. And that, combined with the cushy ride quality and feature-loaded cabin, the Carnival is hard not to consider buying.

Tata Nexon EV Review

BMW Z4 Exterior

Tata Motors launched India’s first electric SUV in January, priced between Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Its strong suites include a silent driving experience, a well-rounded suspension package and of course, its addictive performance. To know more about its driving range, charging infrastructure and range anxiety issues, here’s our review of the Tata Nexon EV.

BMW Z4 Review

BMW Z4 Action

The BMW Z4 convertible is your ticket to be a celebrity. It offers you that open-top feeling along with the wind-in-the-hair moments, as you carve corners through a winding road. And it does all of this, through a fire-breathing 3.0-litre inline-6 cylinder engine that churns out 345bhp and 500Nm. If this is what floats your boat, then here’s our take on the new BMW Z4.

Hyundai Aura Review

BMW Z4 Exterior

Hyundai launched the all-new Aura compact sedan to take on established rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Honda Amaze. It is based on the Santro’s platform, which makes its taller, wider and roomier, when compared to its predecessor. The Aura offers quality interiors and a choice of petrol and diesel engines, including a turbo-petrol mill. To know more about its performance, here’s CarWale’s take of the Hyundai Aura.

3400 electric cars were sold in India in FY 19-20

April 21, 2020, 01:04 PM IST18,851 Views

3400 electric cars were sold in India in FY 19-20

The four-wheeler segment of EV industry saw a de-growth of 5.8 per cent in FY 19-20 as compared to FY18-19. A total of 3400 cars were sold in the former as compared to 3600 cars in the latter. A report released by society of electric vehicle manufacturers said that decrease in numbers was attributed mainly to the lack of bulk purchase of E-cars in FY 19-20 and discontinuation of one of the leading car models.

The acceptability of electric cars in the premium segment in the second half of the year was a positive signal of a quantum jump of a much higher volume of E-cars in FY 20-21. The E-Taxi segment also got some traction, though the range of E-cars and lack of charging spots in enough density were a deterrent in the growth of E-taxi segment.

2019 was a significant year for electric cars in India. Tata launched the Nexon EVMG launched  the ZS EV and Hyundai launched the Kona electric. In this financial year, we can expect more EVs from Tata, Mercedes-Benz and Audi

The electric vehicle market as a whole saw the movement of 1.5 lakh units in the FY19-20. Out of this, 152,000 were two-wheelers, 3400 cars and 600 buses. The corresponding sale for the FY 18-19 was 126,000 two-wheelers, 3600 cars and around 400 buses making a total of 130,000 units. This growth of 20 per cent had largely come from two-wheelers.

Commenting on the sales report, Sohinder Gill, director general, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles said, “The EV industry is taking shape and we believe that despite the COVID 19, the FY 20-21 will be a defining year for all the EV segments. While the EV industry is surely going to face the brunt of Covid19 like any other automotive business, the clearer skies and the cleaner air in even the worst polluting cities is certainly leaving a permanent impression in the minds of the customers about how they can breathe easy and remain healthy if the society moves towards E Mobility. The latest Harvard research of how PM2.5 pollution can multiply the risk of COVID deaths is a stark reality of how the pollutants of the IC vehicles can harm us and is certainly going to make the policymakers think on how to accelerate the EV growth.” Tata Nexon EV Photos103 Images

Tata Nexon EV outsells MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric in March

April 21, 2020, 08:00 AM IST21,220 Views

Tata Nexon EV outsells MG ZS EV and Hyundai Kona Electric in March

– 198 units of Nexon EV sold in March 2020

– Kona Electric and ZS EV clocked 14 and 116 units respectively

– Nexon EV is priced from Rs 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom)

The Tata Nexon EV is the first electric SUV from an Indian carmaker. It is quite a competent electric SUV and the most affordable one at that. And the pricing sure has helped its sales as the Nexon EV has outsold the Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV in March.

According to factory dispatch data shared by SIAM, Tata Motors shipped 198 units of the Nexon EV last month. In comparison, MG dispatched 116 units of the ZS EV in March, while Hyundai managed to sell a paltry 14 units of the Kona Electric. This makes the Nexon EV the bestselling electric car in India, and by a handsome margin.

The Tata Nexon EV is priced between Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom India). It comes packed with a 30.2kWh liquid-cooled battery pack that delivers a range of 312km on a single charge. The electric motor makes 127bhp and 245Nm of peak torque, and all that power is available from the word go.

What’s more, the Nexon EV comes bundled with a 3.3kW wall-mount charger that charges the battery pack in eight hours. Tata Motors has also installed 25kW DC fast chargers at 22 Tata dealerships across the country, which charges the battery to 80 per cent in 60 minutes.Tata Nexon EV Photos103 Images

Tata Nexon EV driven: Now in pictures

Tata Nexon EV driven: Now in pictures

The Tata Nexon EV is the country’s first indigenously developed electric SUV. And priced between Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 15.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), it is also the most affordable one at that. We have driven the Nexon EV, and if you want to read our first drive review of the electric SUV, click here. Meanwhile, here’s a quick gallery of Tata‘s first electric SUV for India.

Tata Nexon EV Left Front Three Quarter

The Nexon EV has incorporated Tata’s IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy, which makes it bold and butch with its upright nose.

Tata Nexon EV Front view

The fascia is all-new and offers freshness to the compact SUV. It gets revised headlamps, a new grille, redesigned bumper and an air dam that has Tata’s signature tri-arrow motif. The blue highlights help distinguish the EV from its ICE counterparts.

A big change are the headlamps, which get LED projectors, and the DRLs double-up as turn indicators.

Tata Nexon EV Left Side View

The profile is largely identical, but features new machined alloys. And the blacked-out B- and C-pillars offer a floating effecs to the sloping roof. The beltline features a blue ceramic highlight.

Tata Nexon EV Tail lamp

Moving to the rear, the Nexon EV features a new design for the bumper, and although the taillights are similar in design, they get a different light signature.

Tata Nexon EV Right Rear Three Quarter

The blue accents continue at the back as well.

Tata Nexon EV Interior

Interiors of the Nexon EV are more or less similar to the pre-facelift ICE version.

Tata Nexon EV Instrument cluster

Changes include a new seven-inch digital instrument cluster and an Altroz-sourced steering wheel. The EV further gets the blue chrome accents and a rotary gear-shift dial.

Tata Nexon EV Rear Seat Space

The seats, both front and back, continue to offer good support and space, but it gets new fabric along with the tri-arrow pattern.

Tata Nexon EV Engine Bay

Under the bonnet, the Tata Nexon EV employs an electric motor that’s rated at 127bhp and 245Nm of peak torque. The 30.2kWh liquid-cooled battery pack offers an ARAI-certified driving range of 312km on a single charge.

Tata Nexon EV Gear-Lever

The Nexon EV gets two driving modes – D and S. While performance is adequate in D mode, the SUV turns into a hooligan when you shift into S mode. Sadly, the top-speed is limited to 120kmph in both the modes.

Tata Nexon EV Action

The battery pack comes with IP67 dust and water resistance under one meter of water. The Nexon EV also benefits from regenerative braking, which helps in extending the range if driven carefully.

Tata Nexon EV Exterior

The Nexon EV also benefits from Tata’s ZConnect smart connectivity system. Similar to the telematics suites from other carmakers, it allows the user to remotely control some features of the SUV, like controlling the AC temperature, setting a Geo-fence or monitor the car’s parameters like battery levels, available range, nearest charging stations and more.

Tata Nexon EV Exterior

Being an EV, range anxiety and charging time is a concern for every buyer. But Tata Motors has you covered as the Nexon EV comes bundled with a 3.3kW wall-mount charger that fully charges the battery in eight hours, while a 25kW DC fast charger (installed at 22 Tata dealerships) charges the battery pack to 80 percent in 60 minutes.Tata Nexon EV Photos103 Images
